How can someone tell if their own stress levels are higher than others and require more than simple mechanisms to put them at ease, such as medication?

This is a great question - when is it more than just stress? That gets back a little bit to stress vs. anxiety. So anxiety is that physical feeling that goes along with stress, but one that doesn;t go away when the stressful situation imptoves. A lot of young people with anxiety disorders start to have symptoms pretty young - like 10 or 11. And there is good evidence that anxiety is a pretty common problem with teens. Some teens go on to outgrow it,and others will have to deal with anxiety disorders their entire lives. If you feel like you are anxious beyond what seems normal or logical for your situation, that is a good sign to see your doctor to ask about it. They can determine with you what would be the best way to tackle the problem, possibly even using medications.

One more point to emphasize - feeling like you are stressed out so much that you want to hurt yourself or take your life is never "Just Stress". 1-800-273-TALK is the National Suicide Prevention hotline. They can be reached online here: http://www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org/

Hope this helps!
